JUDE ZAWAIDEH: BORDERLINES
In Borderlines, Zawaideh explores the dualism between mind and matter with respect to the dreamstate. The series transitions between the artists’ tangible and intangible realities both in and out of a dream - examining the way one moves in a dream, and the control one has over their next decision. Zawaideh’s use of the body in multiple contexts characterize the materiality of certain sentiments experienced during such a state. The space asks its viewers to consider who they are beyond the limitations of their bodies as they explore the relationship between mind and matter within space and time.
Artist Statement:
My approach to art making is to challenge spaces I find myself and others in through time. Observations innately play a huge role in how I form my ideas and compositions. In this series my focus was directed towards exploring the relationship between mind and matter –in other words our inner and outer worlds in unison. The body in my compositions plays a huge role in divulging the inner workings of the mind; that being through its placement in multiple unpredictable contexts which bring about various movements through the space and time continuum. The body is at its most vulnerable in a dream, when we exist beyond our physical state for a brief period of time in such an unforeseeable realm, we uncover truths about ourselves that we wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.
In the dream we have less control over how we move or the decisions we make, yet are aware of them simply as an observer. In a dream we differ in who we are, we are everchanging with every passing moment. Whereas in our waking life, we have control over who we want to be, what decisions we make and how we choose to move. In many ways the lack of control, performance and deception in a dream raise the question of who we truly are beyond who we try to be. Borderlines ultimately employs deception as a channel linking reality and actuality in pursuit of what truths can be unveiled beyond the limitations of mind and matter.
Throughout the making of this series I developed a greater sense of connectedness to my inner world, which in turn enlarged my understanding of others. We all share an unknowing of what the future holds and what awaits us beyond the borderlines, we are more the same than we are different. The deception that separates us hides what ultimately connects us.

Dreamscape
She walks along a fated trail
Bound to a purpose she is yet to unveil
Aware of her movements in close detail
Yet the freedom she envelops is to no avail
She was taught the truth would always prevail
But what applies in a world such as this - so derailed?
For every move is like ten, layered in place
And everything is yours with nothing to retrace
What do you really know past a familiar face?
How unyielding is your faith to finish this race?
The truth is uncovered upon finding your place
And who you are is all that intertwines
Through space and time you are redefined
Now she knows to go beyond the borderlines
